SWOT Items and Scoring

A SWOT item is a strategic claim placed in one quadrant. It should not be a loose note.

Quadrant test

  • Strength: internal and positive.
  • Weakness: internal and negative.
  • Opportunity: external and positive.
  • Threat: external and negative.

Use mixed or unclear only when the team has not resolved classification yet. Add a quadrant-fit rationale so reviewers can see why the item belongs where it is.

Classify each item by origin and direction before scoring or strategy design.

Evidence status

Each item should show whether it is supported, partially supported, unsupported, contradicted, or user asserted. Important unsupported items should trigger review before decision use.

Structured scoring

Use the scoring fields to prioritize:

  • importance: 0-100
  • impact magnitude: 1-5
  • likelihood: 1-5
  • urgency: 1-5
  • controllability: 1-5
  • evidence strength: 1-5
  • confidence: 0-1
  • strategic relevance: 1-5
  • time sensitivity: 1-5
  • priority score: 0-100

Scoring discipline

Avoid giving every item the same score. If all items score the same, the model is not helping prioritization. Add a short rationale for high or low values so another reviewer can understand the judgment.
