SWOT Method
How to complete the SWOT model
Use SWOT as an evidence-based decision model: frame the decision, add evidence, classify claims, score items, generate strategies, then review readiness.
Decision frame
Complete the decision frame first
The decision frame explains what the SWOT is about, who owns the decision, and how the results will be judged.
Required fields
- Decision statement
- Decision owner and authority level
- Unit of analysis
- Included and excluded scope
Quality check
- A reviewer should understand the purpose without extra explanation.
- Avoid broad statements such as SWOT for operations.
Evidence and claims
Connect evidence before final review
Sources and evidence make the SWOT defensible. Claims should be concise statements that can be reviewed before becoming SWOT items.
Evidence records should include
- Source title and type
- Quote or summary
- Page or section when available
- Support type and quality
Review rule
- AI-generated claims without evidence should remain unreviewed.
- Edited AI content should be marked as needing citation review.
SWOT items and scoring
Classify claims and score priority
A SWOT item is a strategic claim placed in one quadrant with rationale, evidence status, review status, and structured scores.
Quadrant test
- Strength: internal and positive.
- Weakness: internal and negative.
- Opportunity: external and positive.
- Threat: external and negative.
Scoring discipline
- Avoid giving every item the same score.
- Use rationale for high or low impact, urgency, evidence strength, and confidence.
Strategies
Turn findings into action objects
Strategies should describe a concrete action, not generic TOWS wording. They can link to multiple SWOT items.
Actionability fields
- Action statement, verb, target, and mechanism
- Expected outcome
- Linked SWOT items with roles and weights
- Owner, timeline, and metric
Linking rule
- Do not force one-to-one pairings.
- A strong strategy can depend on several strengths, address several weaknesses, or mitigate several threats.
Report and export
Use the report after the model is coherent
The report is a professional view of the structured model. The model remains the source of truth.
Report should show
- Decision owner and unit of analysis
- Evidence summary and sources
- SWOT priorities and evidence status
- Strategy actionability
