CBA Attributes and Evidence

Attributes are factual characteristics of alternatives. They are recorded before advantages so the comparison starts with evidence rather than preference.

Attribute matrix

The matrix has factors as rows and alternatives as columns. Each cell should answer: what is true about this alternative for this factor?

Attribute records can include:

  • factual text
  • numeric value and unit
  • confidence: low, medium, or high
  • source type: manual, document, AI extracted, assumption, or previous decision
  • evidence links
  • notes

Evidence-aware attributes

Important attributes should link to a document, reference, URL, manual note, prior decision, or other traceable source. If evidence is not available, mark the attribute as an assumption or document a validation action.

Distinguish attributes from advantages

An attribute says what an option is. An advantage says why a difference is beneficial.

Attribute:

  • "Alternative A integrates with the current identity provider."

Advantage:

  • "Alternative A reduces access-management change effort compared with Alternative B."

AI drafting rule

AI may draft attributes from context or evidence snippets, but it must not invent evidence. Treat AI-drafted attributes as draft claims until a user validates the source and confidence.
